just the edibles

Finalement, photos of our August plumming, figging, vegging, etc.
We've been picking plums for a month now -- we've discovered that each of our four trees are a different variety. August was incredibly wet, with very little sun -- in complete contrast to the heat extremes of July. The plums seem to have been happy enough with it, though the garden veg slowed down considerably -- some even splitting from too much water. But we still thoroughly enjoyed plenty of veg...and we continue to do so. It was our first time growing garlic...and we are much indebted to Sam's ventures into garlic braiding for us. The 'Blauhilde climbing beans" have been quite cool -- not only beautiful, they are pretty funky with their purple outside and bright green inside. In hot water, the purple turns green....they taste good too! The pumpkins continue to get huge.
The 'wasp spider' was a rather exciting garden resident -- huge and startling looking, but completely harmess...to humans. It seemed to like hanging out by the tomatoes and garlic flowers.
Forgive the laziness of leaving these photos in a bit of a mess -- I haven't the energy or time for the hours it would take to place them properly on this page. There are some folk who want to see these photos, and we're happy to stick 'em up, but the 'blogger web-site' set-up isn't super photo-design friendly.
We were amazed at the colours and pure luciousness of the plums, and the photos may give you some hint of that...from their hanging on the tree, thru to the chopping, the eating (in plumcakes), and Greg's first-ever batch of homemade jam (which tastes great!) In one photo you will see each of the four varieties...including the 'greenplums' which we harvested very few of....it wasn't until they were almost all done that we realized that they were supposed to stay green!
There's also a photo here of Greg and the hazelnuts...unfortunately we were a bit late on the uptake with these too...the squirrels and mice beat us to most of them. Next year....
Now, we're into the apples and the figs (that's what the long poles are for).....

Wow. Wow. Wow. That's all I can come up with to say... you've rendered an English major 'wordless' with those photos!
Fabulous photos! I love the ones with the multiple colors of plums especially. They could easily be illustrations for a very fine cookbook! You've got my mouth watering.
